What is Drive-By Fiction?

Welcome to Drive-By Fiction, the current home to weekly original works of flash fiction and microfiction by yours truly.

I’ve worked in the publishing industry, written countless academic papers, and even published book reviews and magazine articles, but I’ve never before ventured into the territory of fiction (call it a lack of imagination or a fear of the unknown!).

But I love fiction, especially the short story. I’m constantly reading works by my favorite writers: Flannery O’Connor, Ray Carver, Ernest Hemingway, and Tobias Wolff to name a few.

There’s much to be said for reading the works of talented authors, but unfortunately good writing doesn’t occur strictly via osmosis. Just reading the collective works of short story masters does not a good writer make.

So, my initial goal for this project is simple: to write often and strengthen my fiction writing through practice, trial and error, and reader feedback. Think of Drive-By Fiction as an online workshop of sorts. Don’t be shy. Feel free to leave any thoughts, ideas, and/or constructive criticisms in the comments section of posts. And, if all goes well, I aim to include reader submitted stories for future workshops on the site.

Oh, and keep a lookout for the occasional link to useful or inspirational articles on writing!

I look forward to this project, and I hope you'll join me on my journey.

Cheers!
